Most hip hop history lessons happen on a screen. This one happens around a turntable. On Saturday, November 7, the Baldwin Hills Branch Library hosts The LAPL Mixtape, On Wax, a vinyl listening experience paired with a community conversation about how West Coast hip hop blossomed in Los Angeles. It is a free, public afternoon, and it belongs on any list of things to do in Los Angeles this fall if you care about the city's music.

When: Saturday, November 7, 2026, 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM Where: Baldwin Hills Branch Library, 2906 South La Brea Avenue, Los Angeles Tickets: Free through Eventbrite

What to expect

This is Verse 3 of the series, titled Hip-Hop Cuts, and DJ R-Tistic joins the conversation. The format is simple: records get played, and the room talks about what they hear. Vinyl listening sessions work differently from a concert. Nobody is performing at you. The point is to sit with a record, notice how it was made, and trade stories about where and when you first heard it.

The program is part of ALOUD in Community, presented by the Library Foundation of Los Angeles, and sits inside the Remix the Archive series. The flyer credits Tyree Boyd-Pates of NOMMO Cultural Strategies as curator. The Remix the Archive name points to the Los Angeles Public Library's own collections, and the poster image comes from the library's Herald Examiner Collection, a photo of N.W.A. at Anaheim's Celebrity Theater in 1989. Expect the archive to be part of the talk, not just a backdrop.

Who it suits

Longtime heads who remember buying these records will find plenty to argue about, and newer listeners get a patient, low-pressure way into the history. It also works for families and neighbors who simply want a free Saturday afternoon activity close to home. If you are scanning LA events this weekend or planning a week out, this is an easy one to add.

Getting there

The branch sits on South La Brea Avenue in the Baldwin Hills area. Plan a little extra time for parking, since library events can fill up, and check the Eventbrite page for the latest details on registration before you go. Reserve a spot there if you want to be sure of a seat. The event runs two hours, so it pairs easily with lunch or an errand nearby.
