Andell Family Sundays is LACMA's recurring drop-in program for kids and the adults who bring them, and the November 8 session takes its cue from the exhibition Home of the Future, 1925-1985: Designing Domestic Utopias. It is a hands-on way to spend part of a Sunday, and a solid pick if you are scanning LA events this weekend for something the whole family can do together.

When: Sunday, Nov 8, 12:30 to 3:30 PM Where: LACMA, outside the W.M. Keck Education Center, Los Angeles Price: Free

What to expect

Artists Bianca Argueta and Karl Petion lead the workshop. You do not sign up for a slot: you walk up, get supplies and make something. All ages are welcome, so toddlers, teens and grandparents can sit at the same table. The workshop is set up outdoors by the Keck Education Center, which keeps things loose and a little messy in the good way.

The theme comes from the museum's Home of the Future exhibition, which looks at how designers and architects imagined domestic life in the 20th century: the kitchen of tomorrow, the house that runs itself, the utopian living room. That gives kids an easy prompt. What would your own home of the future have in it?

Workshops tied to the exhibition run on three Sundays, November 1, 8 and 15, so if this date does not work you have another shot. Anyone building a list of upcoming events in Los Angeles for kids can pencil in all three.

Add a family tour

LACMA also offers a 30-minute docent-led family tour of highlights in the David Geffen Galleries on these Sundays. Tours meet on the W.M. Keck Plaza at noon, 1 PM and 2 PM. Museum admission is required for the tour, tickets are sold online and at the LACMA Ticket Office, and NexGenLA members can pick them up at the welcome table. The museum notes that the tours are volunteer-led and can be cancelled, so ask a team member on the day if you are planning around one.

Getting there

LACMA sits on Wilshire Boulevard in Mid-City. The Metro D Line now stops at Wilshire/Fairfax Station, which puts you right at the museum and saves you the parking hunt. The workshop itself is free, though the galleries and the tour need admission, so check the museum's ticket page if you want to go inside afterward.

Bring water and dress for the weather, since the activity is outside. Kids tend to get absorbed fast, so plan to stay a while. The museum's own page has the latest details, and for more ideas about things happening in Los Angeles, browse our events listings by category.
