If you've got kids and a free Friday, LACMA's Boone Children's Gallery is open for drop-in art-making on September 25. It sits inside the W.M. Keck Education Center, the museum's new building for hands-on learning and family programs. For parents hunting for things to do in Los Angeles that don't involve a screen, it's an easy pick.
What happens at the tables
There's no class schedule and no instructor calling everyone to attention. You walk in, sit down, pick up a brush or a pencil, and start. LACMA's own description says no experience is necessary, and they mean it. Toddlers scribbling and teenagers sketching seriously share the same space.
Seating works on a first-come, first-served basis, so the tables can fill up on busy days. Showing up closer to opening gives you more room to spread out.
Hours and cost
LACMA lists the gallery's hours as 11 am to 5 pm, and the museum says the Boone Children's Gallery is free and open to all, with no membership required. The regular schedule runs Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. LACMA notes that days and times can change, so check the museum calendar before you head out.
While you're there, stop at the welcome table and ask about NexGenLA. It's LACMA's free membership for kids and teens 17 and under who live in L.A. County, and it gets the member plus one guest into the museum free on every visit. If your kid already has one, the Boone gallery is where you pick up museum tickets.
Getting there
The Metro D Line now stops right at LACMA at the Wilshire/Fairfax station, which saves you from circling for parking on Wilshire. If you're pairing this with a walk through the galleries, pack snacks for the little ones. Small kids tend to run out of patience before the adults do.
More around town
The Boone gallery shows up in LACMA's calendar almost every week, which makes it a reliable backup whenever other plans fall through. For more LA events this weekend, browse the arts and culture listings or see what else is on in Los Angeles. And if the kids come home with paint on their sleeves, that probably means the day went well.
