Missed the October tour, or want a second look? 18th Street Arts Center runs the Co-Create Studio open house again on Tuesday, November 3. It is a free, half-hour walk through a working makerspace that happens to sit in one of the more storied rooms in Los Angeles art history, and it earns a spot among the quieter things to do in Los Angeles on a weekday afternoon.
When: Tuesday, November 3, 2026, 4:00 - 4:30 PM Where: Co-Create Studio at 18th Street Arts Center, 1639 18th St, Santa Monica Price: Free and open to the public RSVP: Drop in, or reserve a spot through the link on the event page
The room where The Dinner Party was made
The Co-Create Studio occupies Judy Chicago's former studio. Between 1974 and 1979, she and more than 400 volunteers and workers built The Dinner Party there, one of the best-known feminist artworks of the twentieth century. Today the space is a membership-based creative workspace set up for sewing, painting, cutting, building and whatever else your hands are dreaming up. Artists, makers, neighbors and curious beginners work side by side.
What the tour covers
The open house is deliberately short. You will see the space, meet the team that runs it, and hear how membership and day passes work. That is handy if you have a project that has outgrown the kitchen table and you want room, tools and company without a long commitment. Nobody is pushing you to sign up on the spot. The tour is as much about the room and its history as it is about the membership pitch.
Stay for The Intersection
Right after the tour, at 5 PM, 18th Street hosts The Intersection, its twice-monthly gathering built around good food, conversation and art. Pair the two and a short Tuesday stop turns into an easy evening: see the studio, eat something, and talk with the people who actually use the place.
Getting there and other times
The center is at 1639 18th Street in Santa Monica's 90404 arts district, a short drive from Main Street and the 10. You can drop in, or reserve a spot ahead through the registration link on the event page. If Tuesday afternoons don't work, the center also books tours at other times through its Co-Create page.
