Dog Man: The Musical at Kirk Douglas Theatre

If your kid has a stack of Dav Pilkey graphic novels by the bed, this one's easy. Dog Man - The Musical is playing the Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City, and it's one of the better family picks on the list of things to do in Los Angeles this fall.

The premise comes straight from the books. A police officer and his dog get hurt on the job, and surgeons stitch the dog's head onto the cop's body. What walks out of the hospital is Dog Man: a crime fighter who can sniff out a bad guy but also can't resist chasing a ball. The musical keeps the goofy tone that made the series a fixture in elementary school libraries, with songs, sight gags and the cat villain Petey causing trouble.

What to Expect

The Kirk Douglas is a small house. The listing we pulled puts it at 317 seats, so there isn't a bad view in the place, and younger kids can actually see the stage without sitting on a parent's lap the whole time. That size also means the performers are close enough for the jokes to land with the back row.
