Saturday, September 26 brings the kind of lineup you'd usually pay festival money for, and this one costs nothing to get in. The 2nd annual Latino Carnaval takes over The Reef with Ivy Queen, Snow Tha Product, Legado 7 and Baby Bash at the top of the bill. If you're scanning the list of things to do in Los Angeles this weekend and want something the whole family can go to, start here.
Who's playing
Ivy Queen is the name that'll pull people in early. She's been called the queen of reggaeton for a reason, and hearing "Quiero Bailar" outdoors with a few thousand people singing along is worth the trip on its own. Snow Tha Product brings the rapid-fire bilingual rap she's known for. Legado 7 covers the corridos side of the day, and Baby Bash handles the Bay-to-Texas chicano rap nostalgia.
The rest of the flyer keeps going. Lil Rob, DJ Quik, Suga Free, El As de la Sierra and La Sonora Dinamita are all listed, plus a surprise guest. Organizers say there are more than 20 artists spread across two stages, with DJs filling the gaps between sets.
More than a concert
This is a carnival first. The listing promises a Ferris wheel, carnival games, bounce houses and more than 200 vendors selling food, drinks and everything else. It runs from 11am to 8pm, which makes it easy to show up with kids in the afternoon and stay for the headliners once the sun drops.
It's also all ages. Adults who want to be close to the stage can look at the paid VIP upgrades on the ticket page, which are 21+.
Practical info
General admission is free, but you'll want to RSVP through the ticket listing ahead of time. That RSVP doesn't guarantee a spot, though. Entry is first-come, first-served, and once The Reef hits capacity the gates close. Get there early. The flyer puts the event at Broadway and Washington, and parking is in the surrounding area, so budget time to circle a few blocks or take a rideshare.
Bring sunscreen and cash for vendors, and wear shoes you can stand in for a few hours. Late September afternoons in this part of town can still run hot.
For more upcoming events Los Angeles has on the calendar, browse our arts and culture listings or the full Los Angeles neighborhood page. Ferris wheel rides and a free Ivy Queen set on the same afternoon is a pretty good Saturday.
