In Focus Tour: The Brockman Gallery is at LACMA, Los Angeles, on Nov 6, 2026, 1:00 PM. Tickets: Free with museum admission.
The Brockman Gallery: Los Angeles, 1967 to 1990 is the first large-scale exhibition about a small South L.A. space that shaped a generation of artists. This week LACMA is pairing it with a short guided walk-through, which makes it an easy entry among the things happening in Los Angeles on a Friday or Saturday afternoon.
When: Friday, November 6 at 1:00 PM, and Saturday, November 7 at 1:30 PM Where: LACMA, BCAM, Level 1, 5905 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90036 Cost: Free with museum admission Length: About 30 minutes
What the tour covers
A LACMA docent leads the group through the exhibition. The show tells the story of the Brockman Gallery, founded in South L.A. by brothers Alonzo and Dale Brockman Davis in the wake of the Watts Rebellion. Their space became a vital home for young artists of color and helped nurture the early careers of David Hammons, Suzanne Jackson and Carrie Mae Weems, among others.
The exhibition brings together rich archival material and more than 60 works across media, all tied to the Davises' community-oriented project. It traces how they built a place for artistic experimentation, intellectual exchange and multicultural community, and a guided look is a good way to see how those threads connect rather than reading wall text alone.
Half an hour is enough for the main ideas and a few key works. You can stay on afterward and wander the galleries at your own pace, or head back out to the rest of the museum campus.
Good to know
The tours are volunteer-led and subject to cancellation, so ask a member of the LACMA team on the day if you want to confirm one is running. Meet at BCAM, on Level 1, the building on the Wilshire side of campus. Because the tour is included with admission, check LACMA's current ticket options before you go.
Getting there is simple without a car: the Metro D Line now stops directly at LACMA (Wilshire/Fairfax Station), and LACMA suggests planning your trip at Metro.net.
If you are building a list of LA events this weekend, the Saturday slot pairs well with lunch along Wilshire, while the Friday tour suits a long midday break. For more on what is coming up, browse our arts and culture events or the Mid-City neighborhood page.
