A big museum can feel like a maze of rooms with no thread running through them. LACMA's In Focus Tour: Coastal Connections, Pacific Ocean gives you that thread in half an hour. A docent leads a short walk through one section of the David Geffen Galleries and points out how works from places around the same ocean speak to each other. It is a good fit if you are scanning the things happening in Los Angeles this week and want something calm, cheap and close to the Miracle Mile.

When: Monday, November 9 at 1:00 PM Where: David Geffen Galleries, LACMA, 5905 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles Price: Free with museum admission Length: About 30 minutes

What the tour covers

The David Geffen Galleries are organized into four sections, and this tour introduces the Pacific Ocean galleries. The museum uses these rooms to draw visual and thematic connections across time and geography, treating the building's different "coasts" as a way to read the collection instead of a straight timeline.

Rather than trying to cover every wall, the docent stops at three key artworks from LACMA's collection. Each one opens onto stories and historical influences that traveled across the water. Three works is a sensible number: you get time to look, to hear what is worth noticing, and to understand why a piece sits beside its neighbor. If you have walked through these galleries before and kept moving, this is a reason to slow down.

Good to know

These tours are volunteer-led and subject to cancellation, so ask a member of the LACMA team on the day if you want to confirm it is running. There is no separate tour ticket listed. The price is included with museum admission, so check LACMA's visit page for current ticketing and hours before you go.

Because it falls at 1 PM on a Monday, the tour suits a lunch-hour escape, a day off, or a visit with out-of-town guests who are not tied to a weekend schedule. It is also one of the more affordable upcoming events Los Angeles has on the arts calendar, since you pay only the museum entry you would pay anyway.

Getting there

LACMA sits on Wilshire Boulevard in Mid-City, and the Metro D Line stops at Wilshire/Fairfax Station, a short walk from the museum. Taking the train means no parking hunt. Arrive a few minutes early so you can find the Pacific Ocean section before the tour starts at 1 PM.

If you want to build a day around it, a half-hour tour pairs well with some time in the rest of the collection afterward. Browse more in our arts and culture events for other ways to spend an afternoon.
