Clothing is one of the oldest ways people have made art, and also one of the easiest to walk past in a museum. LACMA's In Focus Tour: Fashion in Art slows that down. In about half an hour, a docent introduces the craft and artistry of fashion, costume and textiles by looking closely at three key objects from the museum's collection. It is a handy pick among the things happening in Los Angeles on a Sunday afternoon.

When: Sunday, November 8 at 4:00 PM Where: LACMA, David Geffen Galleries, 5905 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles Price: Free with museum admission Length: About 30 minutes

What the tour covers

The tour takes place in the David Geffen Galleries and keeps its scope small on purpose. Rather than a survey of centuries of dress, the docent picks three objects and spends real time on each: how it was made, what materials went into it, and what it says about the people who wore or commissioned it.

Textiles reward that kind of attention. Stitching, dyeing, painted or woven patterns and the cut of a garment all carry decisions that are easy to miss at a glance. A guide who points them out can change how you see the rest of the galleries afterward.

Good to know

LACMA notes that these tours are volunteer-led and subject to cancellation. If you are making a special trip, ask a member of the museum team on the day to confirm it is running. The listing gives no reservation option, so plan to arrive a few minutes before 4:00 PM and ask where the group is meeting.

The tour itself costs nothing once you are inside. Your cost is general admission, unless you already have access through membership or a free-entry program. Check LACMA's own page for current admission details before you go.

Getting there

LACMA sits on Wilshire Boulevard in Mid-City, and the Metro D Line now stops directly at the museum at Wilshire/Fairfax Station. Taking the train avoids the parking hunt around Museum Row, and you can plan your trip at Metro.net. Leave a little time to find the galleries before the tour starts.

Make a day of it

A 4:00 PM start leaves the morning and early afternoon open for the rest of the campus, so it slots neatly into LA events this weekend if you are building a museum day. For more gallery visits and museum outings, browse our arts and culture listings and the Mid-City page.
