A museum is easier to love when someone points at the right painting and tells you why it matters. LACMA's In Focus Tour: Modern Art does exactly that, in about half an hour, with a docent guiding a small group through the Modern Art Galleries. It is a low-effort addition to any list of things to do in Los Angeles when you want some art without committing your whole afternoon.
When: Sunday, November 1 at 12:00 PM, and Tuesday, November 3 at 2:30 PM Where: LACMA, BCAM, Level 3, 5905 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles Price: Free with museum admission Length: About 30 minutes
What the tour covers
The route stays inside the Modern Art Galleries on the third level of the Broad Contemporary Art Museum (BCAM). Expect a guided look at a handful of works rather than a lecture on a century of art history. The docent picks out pieces, explains what to notice, and leaves room for questions. If you have walked past these galleries before and kept moving, this is a reason to stop.
Modern art can feel closed off when you meet it cold. Sculpture, painting and design from the early twentieth century often reward a few minutes of context, and a short tour gives you that without a catalog in your hands.
Good to know
These tours are led by volunteer docents and are subject to cancellation. If you are making a special trip, ask a member of the LACMA team on the day to confirm the tour is running. The listing does not give a way to reserve a spot, so plan to show up at the posted time and ask at the museum.
The tour is free once you are in, which means the cost is whatever general admission you pay (or nothing, if you already have access through membership or a free-entry program). Check LACMA's own page for current admission details before you go.
Getting there
LACMA sits on Wilshire Boulevard in Mid-City, and the Metro D Line now stops directly at the museum at Wilshire/Fairfax Station. Taking the train spares you the parking hunt around Museum Row, and you can plan your trip at Metro.net. The galleries are a short walk from the museum's main grounds, so leave a few minutes to find BCAM Level 3 before the tour starts.
Make a day of it
The Sunday noon slot fits neatly into a weekend plan, and it is a handy stop if you are scanning LA events this weekend for something that is both free to join and short on time. The Tuesday afternoon tour works for a weekday break. Either way, pair it with a stroll through the rest of the campus afterward. For more museum outings and gallery visits, browse our arts and culture listings and the Mid-City page.
