Leonard Bernstein called Candide his "comic operetta," and after decades of productions around the world, it still earns that label. LA Opera brings it to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion for a limited run from November 21 through December 13, 2026, one of the more ambitious arts events in Los Angeles this fall season.

What to Expect

Based on Voltaire's satirical novella, Candide follows a relentlessly optimistic young man through a series of disasters (wars, earthquakes, inquisitions, and assorted catastrophes) that keep undermining his faith in the idea that this is "the best of all possible worlds." Bernstein's score matches Voltaire's wit with music that swings between mock-heroic arias, brassy showstoppers, and moments of genuine tenderness. The title character's famous soprano showpiece "Glitter and Be Gay" alone is worth the ticket.

The show runs about two and a half hours and has drawn comparisons to both Broadway and traditional opera. It sits in that entertaining middle ground: accessible enough for first-time operagoers, rich enough for season subscribers who've seen it five times.

The Venue

The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion anchors the Music Center campus at 135 N Grand Ave in downtown Los Angeles. It's one of LA's great mid-century performing arts halls, with about 3,200 seats and clear sightlines throughout most of the house. If you haven't been inside, the lobby and auditorium are worth arriving early to take in.

Parking is available in the Music Center garage directly beneath the complex. Metro access is convenient too: the Red/Purple Line stops at Civic Center/Grand Park station, about a five-minute walk. If you're coming from Silver Lake, Los Feliz, or the Eastside, driving down the 101 and dropping into the garage is typically faster than it sounds on paper.

Tickets and Practical Info

Tickets start at $61, with a range of seat categories available throughout the run. You can book directly through the LA Opera website. The run spans nearly a month, so there's no single closing-weekend scramble.

If you're looking for things to do in Los Angeles this fall that go beyond the usual, an LA Opera production is a reliable choice. The company consistently brings in strong casts and productions that hold up against what you'd see at larger houses in New York or San Francisco.
