Broadway royalty meets world-class opera when Patti LuPone joins the Los Angeles Opera for Leonard Bernstein's Candide, running November 21 through December 13, 2026, at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in downtown LA.

Bernstein composed Candide in 1956, and it's never sat still since. Part operetta, part satire, part Broadway spectacle, it pulls from Voltaire's famous novella to send the naive young Candide ricocheting across continents. He gets expelled from a Westphalian paradise, survives war and the Inquisition, crosses the Atlantic, and lands in every variety of human disaster before concluding, famously, that the best we can do is cultivate our own garden. Bernstein's score is a tour de force: the overture alone is a staple of concert halls, and numbers like "Glitter and Be Gay" and "Make Our Garden Grow" demand singers who can hold their own in both operatic and musical theatre traditions.

LuPone can do exactly that. She's one of the few performers who carries Olivier and Tony Awards with equal comfort, and her voice has lost none of its power or precision. Hearing her tackle Bernstein in a proper opera house, with the LA Opera's full orchestra behind her, is the kind of thing you remember.

The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion is one of the better venues in the city for this scale of production. The sightlines are generous, the acoustics carry detail without washing it out, and the room has genuine weight. It's part of the Music Center complex at 135 North Grand Ave, easily reached by Metro B or D Line (Civic Center/Grand Park station) or by parking in the Music Center garage off Grand Avenue. If you're looking for arts events Los Angeles has that can genuinely hold up to anything in New York or Chicago, this run belongs on that short list.

Tickets aren't listed in the current source, so check the LA Opera's own website or their box office for pricing and to book your seats. The run spans nearly four weeks across two months, with multiple performances scheduled. Weekend shows typically fill earlier, so mid-week dates are worth considering if the calendar is flexible.

For anyone tracking things to do in Los Angeles this fall, this is one of the more substantial arts offerings of the season. The Music Center neighborhood is easy to pair with a pre-show dinner along Grand Avenue or in nearby Little Tokyo, just a short walk east.

More arts and culture events in Los Angeles and things to do in downtown LA are listed on the site if you're building out a fuller calendar for the fall.
