If you are looking through the things happening in Los Angeles this month for something low-key and genuinely social, this one is worth a look. Mehndi Nights: Libraries is a small evening of conversation, music, food and henna, hosted at 18th Street Arts Center in Santa Monica.

When: Saturday, November 14, 2026, 6 to 8 PM Where: 18th Street Arts Center, Studio #2, 1639 18th St, Santa Monica Price: Free and open to the public RSVP: Requested through the event page

What is Mehndi Nights?

Mehndi Nights is a series of intimate gatherings by London-based artist Banita Mistry. Each one brings people together around the craft of henna (mehndi), along with talk, snacks and shared listening. The series is artist-led, and Mistry is part of the arts center's residency community.

The "Libraries" theme

This edition asks every guest to bring one thing to share with the room. It can be a passage you would like to read aloud, or a piece of music you would like everyone to hear. It might be something you have loved for years or only just found. Obscure, sentimental, strange and beautiful all count.

The evening is built around listening, reading and talking. Nobody needs expertise, and nobody has to give a formal presentation. You simply add something to the library. Guests will also contribute to a small collective painting in henna, which becomes a record of the night made by everyone who came.

Practical info

The event is free, but the organizers ask that you RSVP on the event page so they can plan the space. Bring your own drinks if you like, and snacks to share are always welcome. Plan to arrive near 6 PM, since the format depends on people taking turns.

18th Street Arts Center sits in the Santa Monica arts district, a short drive from the Bergamot area and easy to reach from the Westside. Street parking nearby can fill up on weekend evenings, so leave a little extra time.

Why go

A free event like this is a good fit if you are scanning for LA events this weekend that are more about people than spectacle. You get a room of strangers, a few unexpected songs and poems, and a hand-painted keepsake of the evening. If you have a favorite book page or track you never get to share, this is a gentle place to try it out.
