Thirty minutes is a short time to set aside, and that is the point of this one. The Hammer Museum hosts Mindful Awareness Meditation every Thursday at lunchtime, and the session on November 5 is one of the easier things to do in Los Angeles if your week has been loud. You sit, you breathe, and you get back to your day.
When: Thursday, November 5, 2026, 12:30 to 1 PM (doors open at 12:15) Where: Billy Wilder Theater, Hammer Museum, Westwood Cost: Free, no ticket
What the session is
Mindful awareness meditation is the practice of noticing your physical, mental and emotional experience as it happens, without trying to fix it. The Hammer co-presents the series with UCLA Mindful, the mindfulness education center of UCLA Health, and sessions are led by instructors from that program, including its director Diana Winston.
The museum describes the sessions as open to people of every experience level. If you have never meditated, nobody expects you to know the vocabulary. You follow the guidance, and the room does the rest. The practice has research behind it as a way to ease stress and sharpen attention, which is why it has become a regular fixture for students, staff and neighbors alike.
What to expect
You will be in the Billy Wilder Theater, the museum's auditorium, sitting in the same red seats used for film screenings and talks. The lights stay low and the room goes quiet quickly. The format is simple: a short introduction, guided practice, and a gentle close. It runs about half an hour, so it fits into a lunch break.
Each session is also streamed live on the Hammer's website. Even so, the in-person version is the one to pick if you can manage it. Sitting with a room of strangers who are all trying to be still is a different experience from doing it at your desk.
Practical info
This is a drop-in program, so there is nothing to book and no ticket to hold. Arrive a few minutes early, since doors open at 12:15 PM and the session begins at 12:30 PM sharp. Museum admission is free, and the galleries are worth a walk before or after. The Hammer lists self-parking on its visit page, and the museum sits on Wilshire Boulevard in Westwood, easy to reach from the Westside by car or bus.
If you are building a list of LA events this weekend or next week, a free midday reset is a good anchor. Pair it with a lap through the current exhibitions, then lunch nearby. Browse more arts and culture events across the city, or see what else is on in Los Angeles.
The series runs every Thursday, so if November 5 does not work, you can try again the following week. Check the Hammer's program page for the latest schedule before you go.
