A wish goes wrong in Obsession, and the Hammer Museum is showing it on a big screen with an audience. The 2026 horror comedy plays Friday, November 6, as part of MoMA Contenders 2026, a film series organized by The Museum of Modern Art in New York. If you are looking through things to do in Los Angeles this month, this is a good pick for anyone who likes their scares with a sense of humor.

When: Friday, November 6, 2026, 7:30 PM Where: Hammer Museum, 10899 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles Tickets: $20 general admission, $10 for Hammer members Runtime: 109 minutes

What the film is about

The museum frames the story with a comparison to Big. In that film, Tom Hanks makes a wish and turns into a man-child. In Obsession, a character named Bear makes a wish and ends up with a psychotic girlfriend. The Hammer calls it a cautionary tale about seeing the world through rose-colored glasses, and a Blumhouse release in the studio's usual vein.

Curry Barker wrote, directed and edited the film, which the museum says was apparently inspired by an episode of The Simpsons. The cast includes Inde Navarrette, Michael Johnston, Megan Lawless and Cooper Tomlinson. According to the program notes, it is shocking and funny, and it takes a sharp look at romance, sex and basic human interaction among Gen Zers. The museum also says it plays best in a cinema packed with horror fans, so expect a lively room.

The screening is a DCP courtesy of Focus Features, which means a proper digital cinema print rather than a stream.

Tickets and what to know

Seats go for $20 general admission or $10 for Hammer members. Members get an email with a link to buy, or can write to membership@hammer.ucla.edu. Members also get priority seating and half-price Contenders tickets, plus discounts at the museum store and at Lulu restaurant.

A few rules from the museum worth planning around:

  • Limit of two tickets per customer.
  • Seats are assigned when you pick up tickets at the box office, first come, first served.
  • The box office opens at 6:30 PM.
  • There is no late seating, and unclaimed tickets are released at 7:20 PM.
  • No refunds and no exchanges.

Because tickets are assigned at pickup, plan to arrive early rather than right at 7:30. Post-screening guests, if any, are subject to change.

Getting there

The Hammer sits on Wilshire Boulevard in Westwood, next to the UCLA campus. Museum admission is free, but this screening is ticketed separately. Check the museum's site for current parking and visit details before you head out.
