Opening day for a new exhibition is the best time to see it with fresh eyes, and on October 22 the Skirball Cultural Center opens Wishes Made Material by Patrisse Cullors. If you are scanning the things to do in Los Angeles this month, this is one of the more thoughtful entries on the list.
When: Thursday, October 22, 2026, 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM Where: Skirball Cultural Center, 2701 N Sepulveda Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90049 Admission: Not listed on the source page; check the Skirball before you go
What the exhibition is about
Wishes Made Material gives physical form to conversations from Bridging Histories: Black-Jewish Dialogues for Peace and Unity. That yearlong program ran throughout 2025 and brought together leaders from the Black and Jewish diasporas across Los Angeles. Participants shared meals, and the gatherings made room for healing, for confrontation, and for the kind of curiosity that only shows up when people feel safe enough to wonder.
The exhibition picks up where those gatherings ended. Cullors draws on photography and recorded conversations to carry participants' memories into the gallery.
What you will see and hear
The installation combines several pieces into one intimate environment:
- Two textile works on opposing walls, with screen-printed photographs that emerge from and recede into the fabric.
- A single-channel video projected across multiple screens overhead, co-developed and co-created by Cullors and TURL.
- A soundscape co-produced by Tairiq and Garfield Bright, guided by a musical score and by dialogue between the artist and the participants.
Together, the textiles, video and sound work as a multimedia installation where listening becomes part of healing. Repair, in this telling, is not a resolution. It is the sustained practice of staying present as these wishes are made material.
Plan your visit
The Skirball sits along the Sepulveda Pass on the west side of the city, so give yourself extra time if you are driving across town. The listing shows a noon to 5 PM window for opening day, which makes it an easy afternoon plan. Because the exhibition is built around listening and conversation, it rewards a slow pass rather than a quick lap. Plan on lingering with the video and soundscape before moving on.
If you are building a weekend of culture, it pairs well with other arts and culture picks around town, and anyone tracking upcoming events Los Angeles has on offer this fall can add this one early. Confirm hours and admission with the Skirball before you head over, since the source listing does not publish a price.
