Shakespeare's most famous lovers are usually teenagers. In this new production from Open Fist Theatre Company, they are 75. The company keeps the original language but moves Verona to "Verona Village," a South Florida retirement community for active seniors. Among the things to do in Los Angeles this season, it is one of the more unusual takes on a very familiar play.
When: First preview November 8, 2026; opening night November 13; closing night December 19. Start time not yet published. Where: Atwater Village Theatre, 3269 Casitas Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90039 Running time: 2 hours 30 minutes, with one intermission Tickets: Through the TheaterMania listing or the box office at (323) 644-1929
What to expect
The premise is simple and a little daring. Romeo and Juliet still face family interference, social expectations and a romance that other people want to manage. But the stakes read differently when the people speaking the lines have decades behind them. Lines about youth, time and haste land in a new way when the speakers are older adults, and that shift is the heart of the staging.
Shakespeare's words are left intact, so this is not a modern retelling in new dialogue. The change is in who speaks them and where they are set. If you know the play well, expect to hear familiar speeches with a different weight. If you have never seen it, the story is easy to follow, and the retirement-community setting gives it a clear frame.
About the company and venue
Open Fist Theatre Company is a Los Angeles ensemble that stages its work at Atwater Village Theatre, a small neighborhood house on Casitas Avenue. A small room means you sit close to the actors, which suits a play built on intimate scenes and sharp exchanges between families.
Planning your visit
The run is about five weeks long, so there are plenty of dates to choose from if you want a weekend show. If you are scanning for LA events this weekend, the first previews on November 8 are the earliest chance to catch it. Previews often come at a lower price and a looser pace, though this listing does not publish a price, so confirm costs when you book.
Atwater Village sits between Silver Lake and Glendale, with street parking on nearby blocks and a few cafes and restaurants within walking distance. Allow extra time to park, especially on weekend evenings. Check the TheaterMania listing for the performance schedule and any updates before you go.
