Sophie Goldstein's new play Rosa opens November 14 at Company of Angels in Downtown Los Angeles, running through December 17. The production is co-presented by Playwrights' Arena and Company of Angels, two of the city's most active champion-of-new-voices theaters. Armando Molina directs.
The play's premise is a specific kind of wish: what if you could construct a perfect past? Rosa is certainly trying. Goldstein builds the story around that desire, and the mess that follows when memory, family, and identity collide. The play moves between emotional depth and comedy, which is exactly the combination that makes theater feel true rather than performed.
This is the kind of production Playwrights' Arena has built its reputation on. Founded in 1992, the company has developed and staged more than 100 world premieres over three decades in Los Angeles, almost always by writers who don't yet have a marquee name but absolutely should. Company of Angels has been in the city even longer, operating since 1963 with a focus on work that addresses social and cultural realities in the LA community. Putting these two together for a world premiere is a meaningful signal about what this production is.
The venue is Company of Angels' home on San Pablo Street, just east of the 101 freeway near the Boyle Heights/Downtown border. Parking in the area is generally available on surrounding streets and in nearby lots. The 26 Metro bus stops nearby, and the Pico/Aliso Gold Line station is about a 10-minute walk.
Tickets run from $30 for an accessible price to $45 for a standard seat and $65 for a supporter ticket, which helps the company subsidize those lower-price options. There's also a preview performance on November 13 if you want to catch it a day early.
If you follow the Downtown LA arts scene or regularly check in on arts and culture in Los Angeles, this run is worth your attention. World premieres at this level, from two well-regarded companies, don't appear every week.
