Sina Grace has two new books out, and he's bringing both of them to Skylight Books on Friday, October 2. One is Game On, the first book in a new middle grade series. The other is Renaissance of Raven, a fantasy adventure starring the Teen Titans' Raven. If you're sorting through LA events this weekend and there's a comics reader in your house, this is an easy Friday night.

When: Friday, October 2, 2026, 7 PM Where: Skylight Books, 1818 N Vermont Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90027 Admission: Free, according to the event flyer

The books

Game On follows Sasan, a middle schooler who thinks he has things handled. He has cool friends, decent grades and enough allowance for weekends out. What trips him up is balancing his mom's culture against wanting to be exactly like everyone else. Then the other boys all start playing the newest video game, and he asks his mom for help. She says yes, on one condition: he finally has to learn Farsi, the thing he's dodged for years. Gene Luen Yang, who wrote American Born Chinese, called the book "Delightful and heartfelt."

Renaissance of Raven started life on DC GO!, DC's digital webcomics platform. On the anniversary of her mother's death, Raven meets a strange young girl who sends her centuries back in time to Galonia. It's a forgotten kingdom in the middle of a civil war between covens, and her mother turns out to have a hand in its history. The print edition collects all 26 episodes of the series, which won the 2025 Ringo Award for Best Webcomic, plus bonus material from the creators. Grace wrote it. The art is by Nico Bascunán, Carola Borelli and Kath Lobo.

About Sina Grace

Grace is a GLAAD Media Award-nominated writer and artist. Comics readers probably know him from his run on Iceman at Marvel, or from Superman: The Harvests of Youth, his young adult graphic novel at DC. He broke into comics as an editor on The Walking Dead comic book series before he started writing his own. Since then he's turned up on podcasts and, every so often, in a drag show. With a kids' book and a superhero fantasy on the same table, the Q&A could swing from middle school lunch tables to demon fights.

Practical info

Things start at 7 PM, and the Discover LA listing has the evening wrapping up around 9 PM. The flyer says seating is first-come, first-served. Skylight is a small store, so get there early if you want a chair. The listing's "More Info" link goes to the store's own event page, which has an RSVP button.

A free author night is one of the easier things to do in Los Angeles on a Friday, and buying the books at the counter is how an independent store keeps booking them. Game On is written for middle grade readers, so this one works as a family outing too.

Skylight is on the Vermont Avenue strip in Los Feliz, which is lined with restaurants and cafes, so dinner before the talk is easy to sort out. Metro's B Line stop at Vermont/Sunset is about a ten-minute walk south. Street parking on Vermont and the side streets gets tight on Friday nights, so leave a few extra minutes to circle.

More picks are on the arts and culture calendar, and the full list of Things Happening In Los Angeles covers the rest of the city.
