Tattoo an Ornament is at ROW DTLA, Los Angeles, on Dec 11, 2026, 6:30 PM.

Store-bought ornaments all look the same by January. This workshop at ROW DTLA offers a different route: you draw your own designs onto ceramic ornaments, and they come home to hang on next year's tree. It is a good fit for a December list of upcoming events in Los Angeles that involves making something instead of buying it.

What happens

Ceramist and illustrator Steve Stringer leads the session and walks you through the "tattoo" technique, a way of drawing directly onto the ceramic surface. You can sketch a tiny portrait of your dog, a favorite line of text, a skyline or something delightfully strange. The ornaments pictured on the event page give a sense of the range: a dog pile, a flaming envelope, a star, a pair of red boots and a crashing wave, each with a hand-lettered caption.

No ceramics experience is needed. Bring an idea and the rest is covered during the two hours.

No waiting on the kiln

The slow part of ceramics is usually the firing, and that is handled for you. Steve takes care of the glazing and drying after the session, and your finished ornament is mailed to you in about three weeks, just after Christmas. That makes it more of a keepsake for next year than a gift for this one, though it is a very good excuse to get an early start on the holidays.

Practical info

Spots are limited, so reserve through the ROW DTLA event page before the date gets close. The page lists parking at the same 777 S Alameda St address and links to parking directions, so check those before you head to the Arts District edge of downtown. The page does not publish set times beyond the two-hour window, so plan to arrive at the 6:30 PM start.

ROW DTLA is a large complex of shops, restaurants and event spaces, which makes it easy to turn the workshop into a full night out. If you are keeping track of things happening in Los Angeles this season, this one pairs a small, hands-on class with a souvenir you will actually use.
