In 1969, The Who released "Tommy," a rock opera that changed what a concept album could be. Pete Townshend's story of a boy struck deaf, dumb, and blind by trauma who becomes an unlikely pinball champion and reluctant messiah has been reinvented for the stage more than once. This touring production, direct from its acclaimed Broadway revival, lands at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre from October 27 through November 15, 2026.

The score is the draw: "I'm Free," "See Me, Feel Me," "Sensation," and the unmistakable "Pinball Wizard" anchor a book that Townshend himself reworked for this staging alongside original director Des McAnuff, both Tony winners for the show's earlier Broadway run. Expect a leaner, harder-hitting production than the 1993 original. Reviews of the revival have emphasized how the visual language leans into myth and spectacle rather than straightforward narrative.

The story itself hasn't changed: after witnessing a shooting as a child, Tommy Walker withdraws into himself, obsessively staring into mirrors, until an unlikely gift for pinball turns him into a reluctant celebrity and, eventually, a movement's unwilling figurehead. It's a strange, specific story that still resonates as a commentary on fame, trauma, and the way audiences build up and tear down the people they worship.

The Hollywood Pantages, built in 1930 and one of LA's most ornate Art Deco theaters, suits a show built on spectacle. Its scale and sightlines work well for the kind of staging this production is known for: heavy use of projection and lighting to put the audience inside Tommy's disassociated perspective.

Performances run nightly with multiple shows most weekends; check the venue's showtimes page for the exact schedule, since matinee and evening slots vary by week across the three-week run. The theater sits right on the Metro B (Red) Line at Hollywood/Vine, an easy trip without driving into the Hollywood Boulevard traffic.
