Sara Gruen's novel Water for Elephants spent years on bestseller lists before it became a film. Now it's a musical, and the Broadway production has landed at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre for a limited run.

The show follows Jacob Jankowski, a young veterinary student whose life collapses in a single week and who ends up joining the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth, a Depression-era traveling circus. What he finds there: a Romanian horse named Rosie, a showman who runs his company through fear, and a circus performer named Marlena he shouldn't be falling for.

The musical strips the story to its dramatic core. The circus itself becomes the spectacle. The production is built around genuine acrobatics and aerial work performed by cast members, not projected effects or painted flats. The horses are real. The big-band score gives the 1930s setting a sound that matches the period's mix of glamour and desperation.

The creative team behind the Broadway run earned praise for threading the line between spectacle and story. The acrobatics are impressive on their own, but they serve the narrative rather than interrupting it.

The Hollywood Pantages

The Pantages at 6233 Hollywood Blvd. is one of LA's landmark venues. Built in 1930 and seating just over 2,700, it's large enough for full Broadway productions with the scale they need, and intimate enough that even mid-orchestra seats feel close to the stage. The Art Deco interior alone is worth arriving early to take in.

The theatre sits on Hollywood Boulevard just east of Vine, a five-minute walk from the Hollywood/Vine Metro station on the B Line. Parking is available in the structures along Argyle and in the Hollywood and Highland complex a few blocks west.

What to Expect

This is a full Broadway production with a full Broadway running time. The matinee timing puts curtain at 12:30 PM, which means you're out by mid-afternoon with the rest of the day ahead of you. Tickets start at $54, which puts it in range for a special occasion matinee without requiring top-dollar pricing.

If you've read the book or seen the 2011 film with Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson, you already have a sense of the emotional arc. The musical doesn't soften the darker elements of circus life in the Depression, the cruelty, the precariousness, the characters trying to hold something beautiful together while everything around them is falling apart.

For those who haven't read or seen the source material, you can walk in cold. The show sets up its world quickly.

Getting There

The Hollywood/Vine Metro B Line station is the easiest option: the Pantages is a short walk east on Hollywood Boulevard. If you're driving, the Hollywood and Highland parking structure (enter on Highland) fills early for matinees, so the Argyle Avenue structures are a reliable alternative.

Doors typically open 30 to 45 minutes before curtain. Latecomers are held until a suitable break, so give yourself buffer time if you're coming from across town.
