His humor is self-deprecating and sarcastic, and he's also spoken about his struggles with depression and his sexuality. He's an ambassador for the Royal Foundation charity Young Minds.

A lot of his work is with his partner, Phil Lester, as the duo Dan and Phil. From January 2013 to August 2014 they presented a Sunday night show on BBC Radio 1. Their co-written book, The Amazing Book Is Not on Fire, and the photo book Dan and Phil Go Outside both became number one New York Times bestsellers. Their first stage show, The Amazing Tour Is Not on Fire, was followed by Interactive Introverts, which ran from April to September 2018 and played 80 shows in 18 countries.

His first book without Lester, You Will Get Through This Night, is a practical guide to mental health written in consultation with a qualified psychologist. HarperCollins published it in May 2021. In September 2022 he started his first solo tour, We're All Doomed!

In Los Angeles he's billed with Lester on the Hard Launch World Tour, a new stage show that the tour pitches as a night of oversharing and laughing.
