Bassem Youssef: Belly of the Beast Tour

Bassem Youssef is coming to The Wiltern on October 10, and if you haven't seen him live, this is a genuinely good reason to go. His Belly of the Beast Tour is making its Los Angeles stop at one of the city's best mid-size venues, and anyone who follows his work knows he brings a perspective to stand up comedy los angeles rarely gets to hear on a big stage.

If the name doesn't ring a bell yet: Youssef is an Egyptian-American comedian and TV host who built his reputation hosting "El Bernameg," a satirical news show that became one of the most-watched programs in the Arab world before it was cancelled under political pressure. He's since moved to the US, where he's continued performing and speaking out with the same sharp, unflinching style that made him famous. His stand-up connects current events to personal experience in a way that goes well beyond the standard political comedy format.

The Wiltern is a good fit for this show. It's the kind of room where you can actually see the performer, and Youssef works best when the distance between him and the audience is short. The Art Deco building at Wilshire and Western has been a West LA fixture since the 1930s, and it holds around 1,850 people. Seats fill up, so buying early is worth it.

The show starts at 7:00 PM. The Wiltern is right on the Wilshire/Western Metro stop (Purple Line), which makes it one of the easier Things Happening In Los Angeles to reach without dealing with the parking situation on that stretch of Wilshire. Street parking exists on the side streets north and south of the venue, but the Metro option is genuinely convenient from most of the Westside and downtown.

For comedy shows Los Angeles offers all the time, this one stands out. Youssef has a real story behind the material, and the tour title isn't an accident.
