Scott Aukerman's Comedy Bang! Bang! is one of the most distinctive live comedy experiences around, and it's coming to the Orpheum Theatre on September 19. If you've followed the podcast or the IFC series, you already know what this show does: Aukerman hosts a loose, chaotic, anything-goes improv variety show where guests play outlandish characters, riff on absurdist premises, and occasionally derail the whole thing in the best way possible.
The Orpheum is one of LA's great old movie palaces, built in 1926 and sitting right on the Broadway Theatre District in Downtown Los Angeles. The ornate lobby, the gilded ceiling, the deep-red seats: it's the kind of room that makes any live event feel like an occasion. For a show as theatrical and unpredictable as Comedy Bang! Bang!, the venue fits perfectly.
Comedy Bang! Bang! started as a podcast back in 2009 and became a genuine comedy cult institution. Aukerman's long-form improv format with celebrity guests and recurring character players led to the IFC TV version, but fans will tell you the live shows hit differently. There's no safety net, no edit points, no second takes. Characters go sideways, bits collapse and get rebuilt, and the audience becomes part of the energy driving everything forward.
This is stand-up comedy in Los Angeles at its most creative and collaborative. You'll see real-time character work, call-back jokes built over an entire set, and guest appearances that change the show's direction on a dime. Aukerman is one of the sharper improvisers working today, and his ability to keep a room loose without letting it fall apart is something to watch.
The Orpheum is at 842 S. Broadway, walkable from Pershing Square Metro station on the B and D lines. Street parking on Broadway can be tight on weekend evenings, so the Metro option or a nearby parking structure off 9th Street works well. Doors typically open 30 to 45 minutes before showtime.
LA comedy events like this don't come around constantly. Comedy Bang! Bang! does live shows selectively, and the Orpheum capacity isn't huge by downtown standards, so the room stays intimate enough that you'll catch the performers' reactions to each other. If you're looking for things to do in Los Angeles this weekend that go beyond the usual, a live taping of one of comedy podcasting's foundational shows in a century-old theater is a genuinely good answer.
