Herb Bohanon bills himself as "The Entertainment Specialist," and on Wednesday, September 30, he's throwing his own birthday party on the Laugh Factory stage. The show is called Everybody Loves Herb, it starts at 8 PM, and it's one of the more fun midweek things to do in Los Angeles if you'd rather laugh than sit through another quiet Wednesday.

The format is simple. Herb hosts, a stack of comics he calls friends take turns on the mic, and when the 90-minute show wraps up around 9:30, the celebration rolls into an afterparty. The ticket listing names Chris Spencer, Finesse Mitchell and Malik S alongside Herb, plus a "special guest" slot that the club is keeping quiet. Finesse Mitchell spent three seasons in the Saturday Night Live cast. Chris Spencer has hosted and written for TV comedy for decades. Put those two in a birthday room and the sets tend to get loose.

What to expect

Birthday shows run differently from a regular club night. The comics usually roast the guest of honor at least a little, the crowd skews toward people who know Herb, and the energy in the room climbs fast. Lineups at the Laugh Factory are always subject to change, so treat the names above as the plan, not a promise.

The club itself has been at 8001 Sunset Blvd since 1979. The main room is small enough that nobody's stuck in the back, and the red-and-yellow sign out front is one of the easiest landmarks on the Strip.

Tickets and house rules

Eventbrite lists tickets from $28.16 up to $55.17 depending on seating. A few things worth knowing before you buy:

  • Doors open 30 minutes before showtime, and the club suggests getting there 30 to 45 minutes early.
  • Seating is first come, first served. Late arrivals can lose their seat.
  • There's a two-drink minimum per person during the show.
  • It's 21+. Guests aged 18 to 20 can attend only with a 21+ adult, and each adult can bring up to two. Bring a valid photo ID.
  • Photos and video recording aren't allowed.
  • Sales are non-refundable, though tickets can be moved to another show of equal value if seats are available.

Getting there

The Laugh Factory offers valet parking, which is the low-stress option on Sunset. Street parking north of the boulevard toward Fountain Ave can work on a weeknight if you circle a bit. Rideshare drop-off is right at the club entrance. If you want dinner first, the stretch of Sunset between La Brea and Fairfax has plenty within a short walk.
