Expert Of... Reiki: Improv Night at Lyric Hyperion

Most comedy nights start with a premise. This one starts with a real person who is very good at something. Expert Of... is a long-form improv show where an expert at the top of their field gets interviewed on stage, and a team of improvisers turns what they hear into scenes. For the October 15 installment, the expert is a Reiki master, which makes it an easy pick if you're hunting for things to do in Los Angeles that aren't another standup lineup.

The guest: Cara Norris

Cara Norris has spent years working as a neuromuscular massage therapist and Reiki master. According to the show's description, she has worked on everyone from celebrities with NDAs to neighbors who share far too much, and she has an archive of stories collected somewhere between fixing tennis elbow and clearing chakras. That is rich material for an improv team, and the interview portion is where the scenes get their raw ingredients.

The format has three parts: the interview, the improvised scenes it inspires, and a show-and-tell segment followed by a Q&A. Past experts have included a Pulitzer Prize-winning presidential photographer, a sommelier from a Michelin two-star restaurant, a luxury watch repair technician and the curator of Frank Lloyd Wright's Hollyhock House. Lately the series has leaned toward local Los Angeles businesses and communities, with a Silver Lake and Highland Park boutique owner, a head roaster from a neighborhood coffee shop and a community composter among its guests.

The improvisers

The core cast is Robyn Lynne Norris (The Second City, and creator of Off-Broadway's #DateMe), Atul Singh (Shrinking, Hacks, Nemesis) and Jack Ireland (Best Man Dead Man). Guest improvisers for this show are Cole Stratton (co-founder of San Francisco Sketchfest, American Horror Story, For All Mankind), Dana Quercioli (Mystery Science Theatre 3000, Those Who Aunt podcast) and Ithamar Enriquez (WandaVision, Miracle Workers, A Series of Unfortunate Events).
