LOUD AND LIVE

Hablando Huevadas wraps up two nights at the Orpheum Theatre on Wednesday, October 21. Doors open at 7:00pm and Jorge Luna and Ricardo Mendoza walk out at 8:00pm. Tuesday, October 20 is the other date, so if that one's booked or sold out, this is your second chance. Among the Things Happening In Los Angeles that week, it's the rare big-room comedy night done entirely in Peruvian Spanish.

From an Instagram podcast to Madison Square Garden

Luna and Mendoza launched Hablando Huevadas in 2019 as a podcast for Instagram TV, borrowing the idea from the Spanish radio show Nadie sabe nada. They taped seven episodes on a set. The eighth went in front of a live crowd at a small bar in Lima, and the live format stuck.

By the end of that year they were touring other Peruvian cities. In 2020 the show went overseas for the first time, with dates in Spain, Italy and Japan, before the pandemic shut live shows down. The YouTube channel has since passed six million subscribers. On their September 2024 US tour they played Madison Square Garden for the first time, tickets were gone in under three hours, and the run got extended to Florida and New Jersey.

How the night goes

It looks improvised, and mostly it is, but there's a shape to it. The two open by working the room, singling out what they call "personajes pintorescos" (colorful characters) in the seats and mixing those stories in with their own. Later they get to "papelitos del público," reading anecdotes audience members wrote down on slips of paper. Every night plays out differently because the material comes from whoever showed up.

The humor is black and the language is rough. Expect fast Spanish, lots of Lima slang and nobody off limits, including the people in the good seats. They do have limits of a sort: in 2025 they cut a crowd segment called "vidas extremas" after audience complaints. In the theater, the full show has run around three hours, about double the edited version that lands on YouTube. Don't book a tight dinner reservation for afterward. If you'd rather watch than become material, the balcony is the safer pick.

Getting to the Orpheum

The Orpheum is at 842 S. Broadway, between 8th and 9th Streets. It opened on February 15, 1926, as the last of the Orpheum vaudeville circuit's LA houses, and Jack Benny and the Marx Brothers both played it. Inside you'll find a Mighty Wurlitzer organ installed in 1928, one of three pipe organs left in Southern California.

Pershing Square station (B and D lines) is the closest rail stop, roughly 10 to 15 minutes on foot. Paid lots sit around 8th, 9th and Broadway, and a Wednesday is easier to park than a weekend. The Ticketmaster listing says ADA wheelchair and companion seats come in 1+1 and 1+2 arrangements on the orchestra and balcony levels.
