The Moth StorySLAM is one of the more reliably good comedy shows Los Angeles puts on each month. It's not stand-up. It's not improv. It's something closer to the original meaning of the word: people telling true stories from their own lives, five minutes each, to a roomful of strangers who actually listen. On October 6, LAist brings a themed edition to Los Globos on Sunset Boulevard in Silver Lake, and the theme is Magic.
What Happens at a StorySLAM
Doors open at 6:30 PM. Ten storytellers are chosen from the hat, one by one, to take the mic and tell a true personal story on the theme. No notes. No props. Just the person and the room. Audience judges score each story on a 1-to-10 scale, and the highest score at the end of the night wins. The format keeps things moving, and it tends to surface something genuine by the last round.
The theme for this night is Magic. That's a broad prompt by design. Past StorySLAMs on similar themes have brought out stories about stage illusions gone sideways, kids who believed in something until they didn't, grown adults who found themselves inexplicably surprised by the world. You never quite know what you're going to hear, which is most of the point.
About the Partnership
LAist is KPCC, Southern California's NPR affiliate. Their events series brings them out from behind the broadcast and into rooms like this one. The Moth has been running StorySLAMs since the late 1990s and has a strong LA chapter. When the two collaborate, the crowd tends to skew curious and engaged.
The Venue
Los Globos sits at 3040 W. Sunset Blvd., a converted space in Silver Lake that handles both nightlife and live events well. It's a neighborhood where LA comedy events tend to find a natural audience. The bar opens early, the layout works for storytelling, and the walk from the 2 bus stop is about two minutes.
Getting There
Los Globos is on Sunset between Parkman and Silver Lake Blvd. Street parking on nearby residential streets fills up by evening; the 2 and 4 Metro bus lines stop close. Rideshare drop-off on Sunset is straightforward.
Check the LAist events page for ticket details before heading out. This is one of those things to do near me that Silver Lake regulars tend to recommend without much prompting, and it's also a solid pick if you're coming from elsewhere in the city.
