Max Amini at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood

Max Amini is taking over the Dolby Theatre for more than a week this October. The run opens Friday, October 2 and wraps Saturday, October 10, and it's one of the bigger comedy bookings on Hollywood Boulevard this fall. If you've been hunting for things to do in Los Angeles that aren't another club night, this is a strong pick.

Amini is a Persian-American stand-up whose shows lean hard on crowd work. He'll pick someone out of the crowd, ask where their family is from, and build ten minutes out of the answer. A lot of people found him through those clips online, and the live version is looser and longer than anything that fits in a phone video. He tours internationally too: he had a date at The O2 in London this past April.

The AllEvents listing shows six performances between October 2 and October 10. Friday the 2nd opens it, Saturday the 3rd has two shows, and Sunday the 4th has another, with more dates later in the week before the closer on the 10th. The room

The Dolby is where the Academy Awards happen, and it seats roughly 3,400 people. That's a huge room for stand-up. Balcony seats are a long way from the stage, so if you care about seeing faces, spend the extra on orchestra. Crowd work plays better when you're close enough to hear the person he's teasing.

Getting there

The theatre sits inside the Ovation Hollywood complex at Hollywood and Highland. The Metro B Line stops at Hollywood/Highland station right underneath it, which is the easiest move on a weekend night when the Boulevard is packed with tourists. If you drive, the Ovation Hollywood garage has its entrance on Highland Avenue. Give yourself extra time either way. Traffic around the Walk of Fame crawls after 6pm, and security lines at a venue this size take a while.

Grab dinner nearby first. Plenty of spots along Hollywood Boulevard and up Highland are a short walk from the doors.

A week-long residency at the Oscars venue is one of the better Things Happening In Hollywood this October, and with six shows on the calendar you've got a real shot at a date that works.
