If you are hunting for things to do in Los Angeles that lean funny and a little unhinged, The Farce Awakens: Feydeau x 2 is a solid pick. Odyssey Theatre Ensemble pairs two one-act comedies by the French master of farce, Georges Feydeau, into a single evening of slammed doors, bad decisions and married couples at the end of their rope.

When: Opens Oct. 28 and runs through Jan. 17 Where: Odyssey Theatre, 2055 S. Sepulveda Blvd., West Los Angeles, 90025 Price: $20-$43 Phone: (310) 477-2055

What to expect

Feydeau wrote farce the way a watchmaker builds a movement: every misunderstanding is wound tight and then released at speed. According to the listing, the two one-acts "blend madness, mayhem and unexpected twists" while showing the frustrations of relationships and married life. The characters get pushed to their limits and behave in increasingly outrageous, and very funny, ways.

Farce works best when the pace never lets up, and one-acts suit that. Each piece is short, so there is no time for the joke to go stale before the next complication walks through the door. Pairing two of them gives you a full night of theater without the long haul of a three-act play.

The schedule

The run is spread across several evenings a week:

  • Fridays at 8 p.m.
  • Saturdays at 8 p.m.
  • Sundays at 2 p.m.
  • Wednesdays at 7 p.m., on Nov. 18 and Jan. 13 only

That makes it easy to fold into a weekend plan. If you are scanning for LA events this weekend, the Friday and Saturday evening slots are the obvious ones, and the Sunday matinee suits anyone who wants dinner afterward without a late night.
