Precinct is best known as a downtown gay bar with a loud dance floor and a louder drag calendar. On Saturday, September 26, it hands the room over to stand-up. Toxic Thots is a queer comedy show, and for eight bucks it's one of the easier calls on the list of things to do in Los Angeles this weekend.

The flyer lists three featured comics. Joel Kim Booster is the name most people will know: he wrote and starred in the Hulu rom-com Fire Island, co-starred on Apple TV+'s Loot, and has a Netflix special, Psychosexual. Seeing him in a bar on Broadway for less than the price of a cocktail is a strange bargain, and you should take it. Christine Medrano and Michael Benjamin round out the lineup, with Hay Beacon hosting the night.

What to expect

This is a queer stand-up show in a queer bar, so the jokes are written for the people in the room. Expect sets about dating, family, bodies and the particular chaos of being gay in LA. Nobody's softening anything for a tourist crowd. Bar shows move fast, too. There's no big theater lobby to wander, and the comics are close enough that heckling would be a very bad idea.

Precinct itself is a decent place to hang out after the last set. It's a working bar on a Saturday, so the night doesn't have to end when the last comic walks off.

Getting there

Precinct sits on Broadway between 3rd and 4th, a short walk from Grand Central Market and the Bradbury Building. The Metro B and D Lines stop at Pershing Square (4th and Hill), about two blocks away, and that's the least painful way in on a Saturday night. Driving works if you're fine paying for one of the surface lots nearby. Street meters on Broadway fill up early.

Show up close to doors if you want a good spot. It's a bar, not a theater, so seating is loose and the good sightlines go first. If you're putting together a list of upcoming events Los Angeles has for the fall, an early-evening show that ends in time for dinner downtown is a good anchor for the night.
