03 Greedo is headlining The Mayan on Friday, October 9, and the flyer bills it as a Halloween costume party. That's three weeks before the actual holiday, which suits anyone who owns more than one costume. If you've been hunting for concerts in Los Angeles with a bit of a local story behind them, this is a good one. A Watts rapper is playing a downtown movie palace a few miles from where he grew up.

Who's on the bill

03 Greedo comes out of the Jordan Downs projects in Watts, and his name nods to the Grape Street neighborhood he repped on records like The Wolf of Grape Street. His style is hard to pin down. He'll half-sing a hook in a warbly, Auto-Tuned croon, then switch into a flat, blunt verse. "Substance" is the song most people know. Still Summer in the Projects, his full-length project with Mustard, is a record plenty of LA fans still play every summer.

The flyer also lists "Sounds by Atron," so expect a DJ keeping the room moving before and after the headliner. The promoter is Supreme Hollywood Group, booking under the SH Bookings banner.

The room

The Mayan opened in 1927 as a movie theater, and it still looks the part. The facade on Hill Street is covered in carved Mayan Revival figures. Inside, the ceilings and walls carry the same ornate detail. These days it runs as a nightclub and concert venue, with a floor that fills up fast for rap shows. It's a very different night from an arena gig. You're close to the stage, and the crowd is mostly locals.

A costume party in that building makes sense. The architecture already looks like a set.

Tickets and timing

The Eventbrite listing runs the night from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Ticket tiers were listed from $0 up to $65.87 when we checked, and cheaper tiers at club shows like this tend to sell out first. It's worth buying early if you're set on going. Check age requirements on the listing before you go, since nightclub shows at The Mayan usually card at the door.

This is one of the more fun LA concerts on the calendar for early October. Costumes are encouraged, not required, but you'll stand out more without one.

Getting there

The Mayan sits at 1038 South Hill Street, near 11th Street, on the south side of downtown. The Metro's Pico station on the A and E lines is a short walk west. Street parking around Hill and Broadway gets scarce on Friday nights, and there are paid lots within a couple of blocks. A 2 a.m. finish means rideshare is the easiest way home for most people.
