Gene
Gene are an English rock band formed in London in 1993 by singer Martin Rossiter, guitarist Steve Mason, bassist Kevin Miles and drummer Matt James. The UK music press put them in the Britpop bracket and often compared them with the Smiths. Their official biography names The Faces and The Smiths as inspiration.
Their debut album, Olympian, came out in 1995 and reached number eight in the UK album charts. The album went silver, and the title track, released as a single, made the UK top 20. Drawn to the Deep End followed in 1997. Libertine, in 2001, came out on the band's own label, Sub Rosa. In all, Gene released four studio albums and scored 10 Top 40 hits.
In 2000 the band toured the world. One of its Los Angeles shows was broadcast over the internet and recorded for the live album Rising for Sunset. Gene split in 2004, then got back together for a series of gigs in 2025 and 2026. They are billed at an upcoming Los Angeles show.
