Chief Keef Live at The Wiltern in Los Angeles

Chief Keef is headlining The Wiltern on Tuesday, October 27, and for anyone who came up on Chicago drill, this one's hard to skip. Doors open at 7pm and the show starts at 8pm. It's a weeknight, sure, but it's easily one of the bigger hip-hop dates on the list of things to do in Los Angeles this fall.

Keef was a teenager on Chicago's South Side when "I Don't Like" and "Love Sosa" blew up in 2012. Those songs sounded like nothing else on the radio at the time: slow, menacing beats, flat and half-mumbled hooks, and ad-libs that turned into catchphrases. A whole generation of drill rappers, from Chicago to Brooklyn to London, borrowed from that blueprint. He's kept releasing music at a steady clip ever since, much of it through his own Glo Gang label, and he produces a lot of his own beats now too.

What to expect

Expect a crowd that knows the old records cold. When "Faneto" drops, the floor tends to turn into one big shove, so if you'd rather watch than get jostled, grab a spot along the sides or head up to the balcony. The Wiltern is a 1931 Art Deco theater with a sloped general admission floor, so even the back of the room has a decent view of the stage.

Bags up to 12" x 6" x 12" are allowed, and every bag gets searched at the door. Non-clear bags get an extra look, so a clear one gets you in faster.

The easiest way in is the Metro. The Wiltern sits right above the Wilshire/Western station on the D Line, so you climb the stairs and the marquee is right there. If you drive, the paid lots around Wilshire and Western fill up early on show nights. Rideshare pickup after the show gets backed up too, so walking a block or two before calling a car saves time.
