Chucho Valdés lands at Blue Note Los Angeles on September 15 for two shows at one of the city's best intimate jazz rooms. At 84, the Cuban pianist remains one of the most technically commanding improvisers alive, with eight Grammy Awards backing a career that spans Irakere's Afro-Cuban fusion era through decades of international collaborations.

Who He Is

Valdés didn't just play at the center of Cuban jazz. He helped build it. His work with Irakere in the 1970s blended bebop vocabulary with Afro-Cuban ritual rhythms in ways that genuinely changed what "Latin jazz" could mean. Since then he's released close to 50 albums, collaborated with Roy Hargrove, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, and countless others, and won Grammys across multiple decades. Seeing him in a venue the size of Blue Note, where the stage and the bar share the same air, is a different experience than catching him at a festival or large theater.

The Venue

Blue Note Los Angeles sits on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood and seats roughly 250 people. The room is modeled on the original Blue Note New York: close tables, good sightlines, strong sound. It hosts two shows most nights, which means a later set if the early one sells out. Both shows on the 15th are listed.

Tickets and Pricing

Two sets are available: early show at 7 p.m. and late show at 9:30 p.m. Tickets run $19 to $77 depending on seating tier. The venue charges a two-item minimum per person, so budget accordingly. Tables fill fast for headliners at this level, and Valdés qualifies.

Getting There

Blue Note is on Sunset just east of Vine. Street parking in the area gets tight after 6 p.m. The closest Metro stop is Hollywood/Vine on the B Line, about a 5-minute walk east on Sunset. A rideshare drop is simpler than hunting parking on this stretch.
