A banda triple bill at a soccer stadium is about as Los Angeles as a Friday night gets. Chuy Lizarraga and Julio Preciado are sharing the stage at BMO Stadium on October 16, with Luis Angel "El Flaco" also on the lineup. Showtime is 8pm. If you're scanning the calendar for things to do in Los Angeles that feel bigger than a club gig, this is a strong candidate.
All three singers come out of Sinaloa's brass-band tradition. Julio Preciado is the veteran here: he fronted Banda El Recodo in the 1990s before building a long solo career. Chuy Lizarraga made his name as the voice of Banda Tierra Sinaloense and now tours under his own name. Luis Angel "El Flaco" sang lead for Banda Los Recoditos before going solo. Put them on one bill and you get three eras of the same sound in one night.
What to Expect
Banda is loud in the best way. Tubas carry the bass line, trumpets and clarinets stack on top, and the tambora keeps everything moving. Expect plenty of singing along, a lot of cowboy hats in the stands, and people dancing in the aisles long before the headliners are done. The LA date is part of a fall run that also hits Irving, Seattle and Portland, but this is the one stop booked into a stadium, which says something about the size of the local fan base.
BMO Stadium is the 22,000-seat home of LAFC, and concerts there use a stage at one end of the pitch. Seats in the lower bowl are close to the action. The upper rows give you the full view of the crowd, and at a banda show the crowd is half the entertainment.

Getting There
The stadium sits inside Exposition Park, right next to USC. The easiest option is the Metro E Line to Expo Park/USC station, a short walk from the gates. If you're driving, Exposition Park has paid parking structures, and they fill up on big show nights, so give yourself extra time on the 110. Rideshare drop-offs around Figueroa get congested after the show lets out. Walking a few blocks before calling a car usually saves you twenty minutes.
Grab food before you go. The streets around Exposition Park and along Vermont have plenty of taco trucks and casual spots, and eating nearby beats paying stadium prices.

For anyone hunting for LA events this weekend with some real brass behind them, this one's worth circling. It's one of the bigger regional Mexican nights among the Things Happening In Los Angeles this October.
