The Wiltern

Dominic Fike is playing The Wiltern on Wednesday, September 30. It's a hometown-ish show for a guy who grew up in Naples, Florida, and now calls Los Angeles home. The listing puts the set at 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., so you're out before most weeknight concerts in Los Angeles have even started. That leaves time for a late dinner on Wilshire.

Who he is

Fike first broke through with "3 Nights," a breezy guitar song that stuck around on playlists for years. His 2020 full-length debut, What Could Possibly Go Wrong, came out on Columbia Records and pulled from a lot of places at once. You hear pre-grunge alternative guitar, lo-fi hip-hop drums, dream pop haze and some doo-wop harmonies, sometimes in the same song. He sings, writes, plays guitar and produces, and he's been certified platinum.

His origin story is pretty scrappy. His dad bought him an old four-track at a pawn shop and showed him a few guitar chords. After that it was his mom's iPad and GarageBand. The Discover Los Angeles listing files the show under alternative and punk, which tells you the set leans toward his rougher, guitar-first side more than the smoother radio songs.

The room

The Wiltern opened in 1931 at the corner of Wilshire and Western, and the blue-green Art Deco tower is one of the easiest landmarks in Koreatown to spot. Inside, the main floor is general admission standing room and there's a sloped balcony with seats. It holds a couple thousand people, which is small for an artist with his streaming numbers. Sightlines are good from almost anywhere, and the sound is clear enough that quieter songs don't get lost.

Tickets and getting there

Tickets were listed from $195 to $717 when we checked. That's a steep range for a theater show, so compare a few sellers before buying and make sure you're on an official page. Details can change, so confirm times on the listing before you head out.

The Metro D Line stops at Wilshire/Western, right outside the venue. It's the easiest way in, since street parking around Koreatown gets tight by early evening. Paid lots nearby usually charge a flat event rate. Koreatown's restaurants are all within walking distance, from barbecue to late-night noodle spots.
