Mari Froes at El Rey Theatre

Mari Froes brings her show to El Rey Theatre on Friday, October 2, one of the better LA concerts landing on Wilshire Boulevard this fall. The Goldenvoice-presented date slots neatly into a week already packed with things to do in Los Angeles, and the venue itself is reason enough to go even before the music starts.

The room

El Rey Theatre opened in 1936 as a movie palace before it became one of the city's defining midsize concert rooms. The art deco marquee and etched glass doors still look the part, and the sloped, mostly standing floor puts you close to the stage no matter where you end up. For anyone tracking live music los angeles has on tap this season, El Rey stays near the top of the list because the sightlines and the sound both hold up, whether the booking is a rising songwriter or a legacy act working a small room on purpose.

What to expect

Doors open at 7 p.m. with the show starting at 8, giving early arrivals time to grab a spot near the stage or post up near the balcony rail. The room runs general admission standing on the main floor, so plan to be on your feet most of the night. Wilshire Boulevard traffic near Miracle Mile can back up on a Friday evening, so building in extra time before doors is worth it if you're driving in from elsewhere in the city.
