There's a Japanese concept called ma: the meaningful pause between notes, the silence that shapes sound, the space between things that gives them definition. On Saturday, September 26, that idea becomes the heart of an afternoon at JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles, one of the more distinctive Hollywood Events you'll find this fall.

Music & Ma | The Language between Piano and Sadō pairs a live piano performance and talk by acclaimed Japanese pianist Dr. Makiko Hirata with a traditional tea ceremony led by an Omotesenke practitioner. The event runs from 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM in the JAPAN HOUSE Salon on Level 5 of the Hollywood & Highland complex.

What to Expect

Doors open at 1:00 PM. The afternoon begins with opening remarks, followed by a tea ceremony demonstration at 1:40 PM. Dr. Hirata then takes the stage at 1:50 PM for a performance and talk weaving together works by Kōsaku Yamada, Claude Debussy, Johannes Brahms, and others.

Dr. Hirata has spent her career exploring music as a source of healing and connection. She treats music as a universal language capable of synchronizing breath and even brainwaves, and she takes silence as seriously as sound. That's where ma comes in: the cultivated pause that both classical performance and the Japanese tea ceremony hold at their core.

The tea ceremony, known as chanoyu, has shaped Japanese culture for more than 500 years. More than a ritual for preparing and serving tea, it's a practice of graceful intentional movement designed to bring both practitioner and guest into the present moment. Side by side with a piano recital, the combination creates something genuinely unusual in LA concerts: a multi-sensory experience built around slowing down.

The program closes around 3:30 PM with freshly prepared matcha and sweets. Guests are encouraged to linger, talk with Dr. Hirata and the tea practitioners, and let the afternoon settle.

Why This One Stands Out

This isn't a standard recital. The framing question the program poses is a sharp one: what can ma, alongside the Western conception of music as the "art of time," tell us about presence and connection in an era of relentless speed? It's the kind of thing that earns a spot on the list of essential concerts in los angeles this season.

JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles serves as the cultural hub of the Japanese government's global JAPAN HOUSE initiative. The Hollywood location brings Japanese arts, design, food, and ideas to a wide audience throughout the year. This event sits firmly in that tradition.
