Party in the Park: 90s Concert in Playhouse Village

The Playhouse Village Association turns 30 this year, and it's celebrating with a free Saturday evening show at Playhouse Village Park in Pasadena. The music is all 1990s, played live by the tribute band Hit Me 90s. The whole thing runs from 6 to 8 PM on September 26, and you don't need to RSVP.

It's a short, easy one. Two hours is enough to catch the full set, get something to eat and still make other plans for the night. If you're sorting through LA events this weekend and want something that won't take over your whole Saturday, this fits.

What to expect

Hit Me 90s covers the decade's hits, so plan on hearing songs you haven't thought about since high school and somehow still know every word to. The band's name borrows from Britney Spears' 1998 debut single, which tells you roughly where the setlist lives.

This isn't a stadium show. It's a neighborhood party in a small park, and the organizers are pitching it as family-friendly. There will also be arts and crafts with a 90s theme, which gives kids something to do while the grownups argue about whether a song came out in '96 or '97.

Food and drinks are for sale from El Portal, a legacy restaurant in the neighborhood. Bring some cash or a card; the concert itself doesn't cost anything, but dinner does.

The occasion is the association's 30th anniversary. The Playhouse Village is the stretch of central Pasadena named after the Pasadena Playhouse, the historic theater whose Spanish Colonial courtyard is pictured above. It's a walkable pocket of shops, restaurants and small venues. An evening event here is a good excuse to stay afterward and wander.

Since there's no RSVP, there's no headcount cap to beat. Still, showing up close to 6 gets you a decent spot on the grass before the families with strollers and folding chairs claim the good real estate. A blanket is a smart call.

Parking in central Pasadena is a mix of metered street spots and public garages. On a Saturday evening the garages are usually the less stressful option. If you'd rather skip the car, the Metro A Line runs through Pasadena, and the Playhouse area is a manageable walk from the Lake Avenue stop.
