Rubén Blades doesn't play Los Angeles every year, and when he does it's usually worth rearranging your week. On Wednesday, September 30, the salsa singer brings his Fotografías Tour to the Hollywood Bowl, backed by the Roberto Delgado Big Band. If you're sorting through concerts in Los Angeles this fall, this one sits near the top of the list.
Who's on stage
Blades has won 12 Grammys. He's also the rare salsa star whose songs read like short stories, full of named characters, city streets and the kind of political edge most dance music avoids. "Pedro Navaja" is the one everybody knows. His catalog runs much deeper than that.
Roberto Delgado leads the band behind him. The two go back years: Blades recorded Salswing! with Delgado's orchestra, and that pairing is what gives these shows their sound. Expect horns stacked high, swing arrangements folded into salsa, and a rhythm section built for a big outdoor room.
Silvana Estrada is also on the bill. The Mexican songwriter won the 2022 Latin Grammy for Best New Artist, and her quiet, close-mic'd ballads make a sharp contrast with a full big band. Discover Los Angeles bills the evening as a multigenerational night, and that's a fair description of the lineup.
What to expect
The listing puts the show at 8pm, running until about 10pm. Two hours is a tight window for a singer with this many songs, so don't expect every favorite. The Bowl's amphitheater works in the band's favor. Brass carries well in the canyon air, and the bench seats up top are close enough to catch the conversation between songs, which with Blades is often half the show.
Fotografías is the tour name, so plan on some newer material mixed in with the classics.
Getting there and practical info
The Hollywood Bowl is at 2301 North Highland Avenue, right off the 101. Parking at the Bowl is stacked, which means you can get boxed in until the lot clears after the encore. The Park & Ride and shuttle options are the easier way in on a weeknight, and the Hollywood/Highland Metro B Line stop is a long uphill walk away if you don't mind the climb.
Picnics are part of the Bowl routine. Get there early, grab a table or eat in your box, and you'll skip the rush at the gates right before showtime.
The listing doesn't show a ticket price, so check the event page before you go. Seats for LA concerts at the Bowl range widely, from cheap benches in the back to boxes near the stage.
