Seffarine takes the stage at Theatre Raymond Kabbaz on Thursday, October 8, for a 70-minute set of music from both shores of the Mediterranean. Most concerts in Los Angeles on a Thursday night are club gigs or arena dates. This one is a seated evening of oud, flamenco guitar and Moroccan vocals in a small Westside theater, and it's a good pick if you want something you won't hear on the radio.

Who Seffarine are

The band takes its name from the Seffarine square in Fez, Morocco, the old metalworkers' plaza where you can still hear hammers on copper all day. Moroccan singer Lamiae Naki and guitarist Nat Hulskamp lead the group. Their sound pulls from Arabic and Andalusian song, flamenco, Persian music and West African rhythm, so one tune might open like a North African ballad and end in a flamenco bulería.

On stage you'll get Naki's voice alongside flamenco guitar, oud, bass and percussion, plus dance. The cover photo gives you a sense of it: a frame drum, an upright bass and a dancer in the mix. They've toured internationally and have worked with flamenco artists including Latin Grammy winner Antonio Rey.

What to expect

The concert runs about 70 minutes, so plan on a tight show rather than a long night. The listing puts the start at 8 PM. Expect quiet passages where the oud and voice carry the room, then faster sections where the percussion and footwork take over. You don't need to know anything about maqam or flamenco forms to enjoy it.

The venue

Theatre Raymond Kabbaz opened in 2000 as part of Le Lycée Français de Los Angeles. It's a nonprofit theater that books international artists year round and gives a big share of its calendar to French language and culture. It's an intimate room, which suits acoustic instruments well.
