Who is The Don Brown Collective

Brown is a jazz drummer and bandleader who put together a group of what he calls LA's best jazz musicians, and the Collective plays around the city under that banner. According to the venue, the group has played Dodger Stadium and the Gardena Jazz Festival, earned a mention in the LA Times, and performed at a LACMA screening of "Tony Williams In Africa."

His range is wider than a jazz club bio usually suggests. Brown has also played heavy metal circuit stages, including The Broad, Copenhell and Knotfest in Iowa, and he works as a sideman with artists such as Serpentwithfeet, Keyon Harrold and Kelly Rowland. He also music directs R&B artist Jenevieve. That mix is a decent clue to what the drum chair will sound like: hard-hitting, but listening closely.

What to expect at Blue Note

Blue Note Los Angeles is a dinner-and-drinks club, and live music in Los Angeles rarely gets more up close than this. The venue lists a $20 per person minimum with a full bar and dinner menu. Seating is first come, first served, and when the bar area fills up the rest becomes standing room. Table seating is all ages, while the bar area is 21+. Tickets are sold per set, so check the time on the listing before you buy, and note that the venue says there are no refunds or exchanges.

Getting there

The club is on Sunset Boulevard in the middle of Hollywood, a short drive from the 101. Street parking is metered and limited, so give yourself extra time or use a garage or rideshare. With doors opening two hours ahead of the early set, you can eat at the club or nearby before the music starts.

If you are looking through things happening in Hollywood for a Monday or Tuesday plan, a jazz set from a hometown drummer is a good use of one. For more nights like it, browse the concerts category or see what else is on in Hollywood.
