Ska never really left Los Angeles. It just moved into backyards, VFW halls and Eastside parties for a while. On Friday, October 2, a five-band skacore bill takes over the Globe Theatre on Broadway, and it's one of the louder concerts in Los Angeles that week. The promoter, Evoekore Media, is pitching it as "the biggest skacore show of the fall." The flyer says it's the first time this lineup has played the Globe.
The lineup
La Resistencia and Red Store Bums share top billing. Below them on the flyer sit Mafia Rusa, The Paranoias and The Steadians. That's a full night of upstrokes, horn lines and fast punk drumming, so pace yourself if you plan to skank through all five sets.
Skacore is the heavier end of ska. Think distorted guitars, shouted choruses and a pit that runs at double time, with the offbeat rhythm guitar still holding everything together. If your idea of ska is a polite two-tone record, this will be a lot rowdier. If you grew up on Southern California ska-punk, it'll feel like home.
The venue
The Globe opened in 1913 as a legitimate theater and later spent decades as a movie house on Broadway's old theater row. It's been restored and now books club nights and concerts across several floors. The flyer promotes a "massive dance floor" and multiple levels, which matters for a show like this. You can get into the pit or hang back upstairs and still see the stage.
Tickets and timing
Tickets on Eventbrite were listed from $24.95 to $28.32 when we checked, and the organizer says presale is highly recommended. There are no refunds, so be sure before you buy. Eventbrite lists a 7:30 p.m. start, while the flyer and event description say 8 p.m. Plan on arriving around 7:30 to be safe.
The show is all ages, and there's a full bar for guests 21 and up. Bring ID if you want a drink.
Getting there
The Globe is at 740 South Broadway, between 7th and 8th streets. The Metro B and D lines stop at Pershing Square, about a ten-minute walk north on Hill Street. Street parking on Broadway is tight on a Friday night, and the paid lots on Hill Street and Spring Street fill up early. Rideshare drop-off works fine on Broadway itself.
Downtown has plenty of late-night food within a few blocks if you need tacos after the last set. For more live music Los Angeles has on the calendar, check our concerts page and the full list of what's coming up in downtown LA. If you're building a list of things to do in Los Angeles on the first weekend of October, a five-band ska night for under thirty dollars is a strong pick.
