The touring production of Water for Elephants lands at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre on Sunday, September 27. If your weekend plan is still a blank, it's one of the stronger LA events this weekend, and it isn't the usual bar-and-brunch routine. Can't make Sunday? There's a Saturday, September 26 performance too.

The story comes from Sara Gruen's 2006 novel, which sold millions of copies and became a 2011 film. Jacob Jankowski is a veterinary student whose life collapses during the Depression. He hops a moving train, wakes up with the Benzini Brothers traveling circus, and ends up tending the animals. There's Marlena, a star performer he has no business falling for. There's August, her husband, who runs the show with a mean streak. And there's Rosie, an elephant everyone else has written off. It all plays out as an old man's memory, so the spectacle has a sad undertow.

Why the stage version works

The musical opened on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre in 2024 and earned seven Tony nominations. Its trick is simple: the circus actually happens on stage. The cast includes acrobats who tumble, climb and fly through scenes instead of standing in the wings while someone describes the act. Rosie and the other animals are built from puppetry and bodies in motion, not a fake elephant on wheels.

The score is by PigPen Theatre Co., a group that writes in a folk and Americana register. Expect fiddle, guitar and harmonies rather than a brassy overture. If your weekends usually go to concerts in Los Angeles, this is the Broadway show most likely to sound familiar.

Content note: there's a violent ringmaster at the center of the plot and a few scenes get dark. Teens should be fine. Little kids might find parts of it rough.

The room

The Pantages opened in 1930 and hosted the Academy Awards through the 1950s. The lobby is pure Art Deco: gilded figures, sculpted ceilings, the works. That's the lobby in the photo up top. Get there early enough to wander it before the doors to the house open. It's now the main LA stop for touring Broadway productions, which is why a show like this ends up here.

Practical info

When: Sunday, September 27, 2026 (also Saturday, September 26). Check the ticket page for curtain time. Where: Hollywood Pantages Theatre, on Hollywood Boulevard near Vine. Tickets: Sold through Ticketmaster. We couldn't confirm a price, so check seat maps there before you commit.

The Hollywood/Vine Metro B Line station is steps from the theater, and that's the easiest way in. Hollywood Boulevard traffic on a weekend is its own ordeal. If you drive, garages on Argyle and around Vine fill up close to showtime, so leave a cushion.
