Actress at the Echoplex

Actress plays the Echoplex on Monday, October 19. If your idea of LA EDM events leans more toward strange, textured records than main-stage drops, circle this one. Actress is the working name of Darren J. Cunningham, a British electronic musician and DJ from Wolverhampton, England. His tracks often sound like club music heard through a wall, then taken apart and put back together slightly wrong. That's the appeal.

Who is Actress

Cunningham didn't take the usual route into music. As a young footballer he signed with West Bromwich Albion, and an injury ended that career. He moved to London, got deep into the club scene, and in 2004 started Werk Discs. It began as a club night and grew into a label that has put out records by Helena Hauff and Zomby next to his own.

The albums are why people cross town for him. Hazyville came out in 2008. Splazsh followed in 2010 and topped The Wire's year-end critics' list. R.I.P. (2012) took a sharp turn inward, and Ghettoville (2014) arrived with a press release that read like a farewell. It wasn't one. AZD (2017) leaned into his clubbier side, and he's kept going since with Karma & Desire (2020), LXXXVIII (2023) on Ninja Tune, and Statik (2024) on Smalltown Supersound.

What to expect

Don't count on a four-on-the-floor party from start to finish. An Actress set can drift from murky techno into ambient haze and back again, and the crowd for it tends to listen as much as it dances. Ticketmaster files the night under dance/electronic. The listing doesn't name any support acts, and the venue notes that times and supporting acts can change without notice, so check again the day of.

The Echoplex is the downstairs room beneath The Echo in Echo Park. It's a standing-room club with a wide floor, and it's a good size for this kind of show: big enough to feel like a night out, small enough that you can actually see who's behind the gear.
