Âme, DJ Tennis & Kaz James: Chinatown Block Party

Some of the best LA EDM events don't happen inside clubs. Tonight, Stranger Than and Future Primitive bring their Chinatown Block Party back to Gin Ling Way, an alley-turned-lantern-lit corridor in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles, and the lineup is as good as any indoor room in the city.

Âme, the Berlin duo of Kristian Beyer and Frank Wiedemann, headlines. Their sets tend to move through the full range of what you'd call deep, melodic, and percussive house, but they resist easy categorization. They're known for reading a crowd over hours rather than playing to peak energy at any one moment, which makes an outdoor, late-afternoon-into-night setting like this a particularly good fit.

DJ Tennis joins them. The Life and Death label boss brings a similarly long-view approach to selecting, with plenty of cross-genre texture. Kaz James, an Australian-born producer and DJ with deep roots in Ibiza and a reputation for dense, melodic sets, rounds out the headlining trio. Masha Mar opens the night. She's been a reliable presence on the more curated side of the LA circuit, and her sound sits comfortably alongside the evening's general direction.

The event runs 5 PM to midnight, so there's real time to settle in before dark. Gin Ling Way itself is a narrow pedestrian alley lined with traditional lanterns in Chinatown, and the block party format means the stage and crowd spill into the street. It's one of those spots in LA that doesn't look like a concert venue until it is one, and the atmosphere once it fills up can be genuinely good.
