Bingo Loco at Academy LA in Hollywood

Bingo is supposed to be quiet. Somebody's grandmother, a dauber, a folding table. Bingo Loco throws all of that out. On Saturday, September 26, the rave bingo show takes over Academy LA at 6021 Hollywood Blvd, and the room will be loud long before anyone shouts a winning line. Doors open at 6:15 PM and it's 21+.

If you've been scrolling LA EDM events looking for something that isn't another four-hour DJ set, this is a good pick. It's a club night built around a game, which gives the whole room something to do besides stand and nod.

How the night works

You get a bingo card. A host calls numbers from the stage. Between rounds the DJ drops into 90s and 00s music, the kind of songs everybody in the room knows every word to, and the crowd turns into one giant sing-along. The flyer for this date promises dance offs, lip sync battles and confetti showers, plus what it calls crazy prizes.

You don't need to be good at it. Nobody is. Half the fun is losing track of your card because the confetti cannon went off while you were mid-chorus.

The room

Academy LA sits on Hollywood Blvd a few blocks east of Vine, and it's a proper nightclub that normally books touring DJs. Putting bingo in a room with club lighting and a club sound system is the whole joke, and it works. The early 6:15 PM doors also mean you can do this and still make other plans after.

Street parking along this stretch of Hollywood Blvd fills up fast on a Saturday, and lot rates climb after dark. The Metro B Line stops at Hollywood/Vine, a short walk west of the club. Rideshare drop-off on Hollywood Blvd is easy early in the evening and messier later.

Dress for dancing and for getting covered in confetti. Wear something you don't mind finding paper squares in for a week.
