Bingo Loco Returns to Academy LA in Hollywood

Picture a bingo hall, then give it a nightclub's lights, a DJ booth and a confetti cannon, and you've got Bingo Loco. The touring rave bingo party comes back to Academy LA at 6021 Hollywood Blvd on Saturday, October 24. Doors open at 6:15 PM. You have to be 21+.

It's one of the odder LA EDM events on the calendar this fall, and that's a compliment. Most club nights ask you to stand still and watch a DJ for four hours. This one gives you a card, a dauber and a reason to yell at strangers.

What actually happens

A host up on stage calls the numbers. You mark your card. In between rounds, the DJ plays 90s and 00s songs, the stuff you haven't heard since a middle school dance but somehow still know every word of. The October flyer lists dance offs, lip sync battles and confetti showers, and it promises "crazy prizes" for the winners.

Skill doesn't matter. People lose their place all the time, usually because the whole room just broke into a chorus. If you're the competitive type, keep one eye on your card anyway. Somebody has to win.

A week before Halloween

October 24 falls the Saturday before Halloween weekend, so expect a crowd that's already in a party mood. The flyer doesn't mention a costume theme, so don't count on one. If you're building a list of things to do in Los Angeles that month, this one works as a warm-up for the bigger Halloween parties, or as a group outing for friends who'd never go to a regular rave.

The venue

Academy LA is a full-size Hollywood nightclub that usually books touring DJs, with the sound system and lighting rig to match. That's the joke of the whole format, and it lands. The 6:15 PM doors are early by club standards, so you can play, dance, and still get dinner or a second stop in afterward.

The club is cashless. It takes credit and debit cards plus Apple, Google and Samsung Pay. Academy LA also says it only honors tickets bought through its official sellers (TicketWeb, and TIXR for some events), not resale sites like StubHub or Vivid Seats. The name on your ticket needs to match your government ID.

Practical info

• Date: Saturday, October 24
• Doors: 6:15 PM
• Venue: Academy LA, 6021 Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90028
• Ages: 21+, bring a valid ID

Parking on this part of Hollywood Blvd is tough on a Saturday night, and the lots charge more once it gets dark. The Metro B Line's Hollywood/Vine station is a short walk west of the club, which beats circling the block. Rideshare pickup gets hectic after midnight, so give yourself a couple of extra minutes.

Wear shoes you can dance in and clothes you won't mind picking confetti out of for days.
